American-born Australian actor Mel Gibson rose to fame in the 1980s with a string of action-adventure movies and later won praise for his work as a director and producer. His action hero roles are what made him most famous, especially those he played in the first three installments of “Mad Max.”

He did, in fact, win numerous accolades in the span of his career, including two Oscars, and the occasion was related to his passion for cigars. Gibson handed Stephen Baldwin a Cohiba Robusto the night after he received the prize, as mentioned above.

Baldwin recounted his interaction with Gibson during the event in an interview with Cigar Aficionado, saying, “If there are any two people I admire tremendously, they’re Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford.”

“They’ve had enduring careers, and they’re regular Joes. I’ll never forget being in the Grand Havana in Beverly Hills at 1:30 in the morning on Oscar night when Mel Gibson comes walking in with a statue in each hand. That picture is burned into my memory forever. He walks up to his locker, pulls out a box of Cohibas, and starts handing them out.”

Mel Gibson is giving me a Cohiba Robusto on the night that he won two Oscars!” he gushed. “I have the cigar in a Baggie, thumbtacked to the wall of my locker in the Grand Havana. I have a note in there saying that on the night I win my Oscar, I will go to the Grand Havana in Beverly Hills, and I am going to smoke that fucking cigar. Then I can say, ‘Mel, I know how you feel.'”

In a totally different situation, Gibson also displayed his love for cigars in the entertainment industry after he or his company, Icon Productions, purchased the rights to Christopher Buckley’s novel “Thank You for Smoking” in 1994 before the film’s release.

As the head of Big Tobacco’s public relations division, Nick Naylor, played by Aaron Eckhart, promotes cigarettes in the film while simultaneously seeking to set an excellent example for his son, who is 12 years old.
