Are Montecristo Cigars Cuban or Dominican?
Montecristo originated in Cuba, but after the Communist Revolution in Cuba, the founders Alonso Menéndez and Garcia fled Cuba. Castro nationalized the cigar industry and took over Montecristo cigars. Today there are two separate Montecristo brands, one in Cuba and one in the Dominican Republic.
Non-Cuban Montecristos are made and distributed by Altadis USA. Altadis USA bought the company from the original founders. Montecristo cigars are made at the immense Tabacalera de Garcia factory in the Dominican Republic.
